This small, inexpensive copter gave low-budget shooters and hobbyists the ability to capture unique, sweeping aerial shots. This month, a new DJI Phantom has been released with some new features, including a built-in camera.
The DJI Phantom 2 Vision’s onboard camera shoots full HD 1080p30/i60 video and takes 14-megapixel photos.
ElefunTV made a side by side comparison between the new camera and a GoPro Hero 3+:
As you can see in the comparison, the GoPro image is much flatter than the Phantom’s camera. To a consumer, the Phantom’s camera might look better because the color “pops”, but filmmakers generally want a flatter image so that they can put their own grade on it in post.
Other features include an app for iPhone that allows you to see your flight in real-time. You can also tilt the camera during flight via the app. Photos, including panorama’s, can be taken and shared on social networks with ease.
We think the new DJI Phantom Vision 2 will be the better choice for consumer use. Getting the original Phantom to take smooth video with a GoPro takes some extra hardware and soldering. The Vision 2, on the other hand, is essentially read to go out of the box.
